Avon set a target to reduce, by the end of 2008, the quantity of waste generated per unit by 20 percent from the 2004 baseline levels (38.32 lbs/thousand units produced).
Status
By the end of 2007, Avon’s waste index had risen 17 percent from the 2004 levels to 44.86 lbs/thousand units produced. This increase was partly due to an unforeseen increase in volumes of obsolete or expired inventory, which are calculated as waste. Therefore, we did not meet the 20 percent reduction target (against 2004 baseline) by the end of 2008. However, in 2008 the waste index dropped significantly and fell below the 2006 level, and we will work to continue this downward trend, as well as to further reduce waste generated per unit produced.
